Bottega Veneta is excellent in a great deal of ways–materials, construction, longevity–but maybe a lot of excellent is the brand’s refusal to float together with the patterns of the moment. At Bottega, creative director Tomas Maier instead utilizes brand signatures, woven intrecciato leather and beyond, to build a wardrobe of bags that real, grown women would be pleased to wear. Bottega Veneta’s resort 2016 purses are for adults, just like the brand’s bags always are.
Bottega is, in some ways, the anti-Moschino; where that brand appeals to the nostalgic teen in all of us, Bottega appeals to exactly how we envision the best, a lot of capable, a lot of extravagant version of ourselves. That indicates the bags aren’t necessarily head-turners, but they’re all stunning upon inspection. That’s just exactly how the Bottega lady likes it, though; in Tomas Maier’s world, a bit discretion goes a long way.
